John Jacob Phipps, age 78 of Harrison, OH passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Shawneespring Health Care Center in Harrison. Born May 11, 1934 in Harlan, KY he was the son of James Levi & Flora Mae (Wilhoit) Phipps. He started his career as a radio announcer for WHLN at the age of 17 in Harlan, KY, then John served in the United States Army from 1955-1958, in an administrative capacity as a SP-5, spending two of those years in Germany. Afterwards he began his retail career with Meldisco Corp and later for Walmart. Mr. Phipps married Phyllis Rae Davis in Jonesville, VA on November 16, 1955. John had a love for music ranging from early country to classical waltzes, this stemmed from his early days as a radio broadcaster. He loved to spend time at the beach and watch the sunsets. John was known in the family by the name "Papa," he was a kind compassionate man who was more than a grandfather to his three grandchildren. They refer to him as their "2nd Dad." He was quiet loving person who stood by his beliefs and took care of his family. He will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Phipps is survived by his wife Phyllis Rae Phipps, daughter & son-in-law Patti Dawn & Daryl Hall of Harrison, OH, grandchildren Melody Lynn (Dustin) Hartzler, Jaclyn Amber Hall & Ashley Lauren Hall. He will also be missed by his brother, Bob (Penney) Phipps of Tennessee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Phipps and half sisters Mae Nelson and Joy Rauscher. Visitation will be Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 1-3pm followed by services at 3pm at Jackman Kercheval Meyers Funeral Home, Harrison, OH. Burial will be Monday, August 20, 2012 at 11:00am at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North, 205 Eibeck Ln, Williamstown, KY 41097 with military honors.
