Ilene Fischer, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, in Okeana, Ohio. Born the daughter of McKinnley and Lora (nee Adams) Cornett on January 5, 1929, in Skyline, Kentucky, Ilene’s life was a testament to hard work, devotion, and quiet joy.
Ilene devoted an impressive 38-1/2 years to her career as a line worker at Seagram's Distillery, where her steady hands and unwavering commitment were deeply respected. Though she completed her education through the 11th grade, Ilene's wisdom and practical knowledge were lessons to all who knew her.
A woman of simple pleasures, Ilene found great comfort and happiness in watching wildlife from her window, a quiet connection to nature that filled her days with peace and wonder. She was also a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Harrison, where her faith and fellowship enriched the lives of many.
Ilene was preceded in death by her beloved parents, McKinnley and Lora Cornett; her daughter, Gina Smith; and her siblings: brothers Harold Cornett and Willis Cornett, and sister Lillian Lucas. Their memories live on in the hearts of all who loved Ilene.
She leaves behind a loving family who were the centers of her world. Her children, Dennis Steele, Janet Steele, and Sharon (Bob) Humphry, carry forward her legacy of strength and kindness. Her family tree blossomed with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy. Ilene was also lovingly supported by her sister, Linda (Ron) Wells.
Visitation services to honor Ilene’s remarkable life and providing a time for all who knew her to gather, reflect, and celebrate a truly beautiful life will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 12:00 p.m., with Pastor Stephen Sapp officiating, all at at the Jackman Hensley Funeral Home located at 215 East Broadway Street, Harrison, Ohio 45030. A burial will follow at New Haven Cemetery in Harrison, Ohio.
Ilene Fischer’s spirit shone brightly through her dedication, compassion, and the tender moments she shared with her family and community. She was a woman whose quiet strength left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege to know her. Though she has departed this world, the love she sowed will continue to grow and inspire across generations.
