Hershel Smith

Hershel “Curly” Smith, age 84 of Harrison, Ohio passed away Friday, December 17, 2021 in Hamilton, Ohio.  Born January 5, 1937 in Hazard, Kentucky the son of Wilson “Wick” and Maggie (Turner) Smith.

Curly, a 1954 graduate of Buckhorn High School, married Marietta Sheerwood May 15, 1999 in West Chester, Ohio.  Curly retired from General Electric (Blue Ash, OH) after many years as an electrical worker. During his career with GE, Curley served as President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #1198. Also known as “Smitty”, Hershel owned and operated Smitty’s Corner Store in New Haven from 1971 through 1991. He also was a dedicated member of Covenant Way Church in Lebanon, Ohio.  Curly raised and trained beagles and coonhounds and won a Kentucky State Championship with his prized coonhound.  As an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing with family and friends.

Curley is survived by his wife Marietta Smith.  Father of Darrel (Natalie) Smith, Ryan (Nichole) Smith, Adam (Tina) Smith and Tara (Will) Fusaiotti. Also Father to Bryan (Helen) Gregory, Mark (Dawna) Gregory, Timothy Gregory, Trace Davenport.  Hershel is the loving “Papaw” of 30 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Brother of Geraldine Peachee, Mildred Smith, Vernon (Laura) Smith, Carl (Anetta) Smith and Larry (Diane) Smith. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and too many friends and hunting buddies to recount.

Hershel has been preceded in death by his parents Wick and Maggie Smith, children Steven R. Smith, Carl Gregory Jr., Steve Gregory, brothers Donald and Bert Smith and brother-in-law Daryl Peachee.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 20, 2021 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Todd Smith officiating all at Jackman Hensley Funeral Home 215 Broadway Street Harrison, Ohio 45030.  Burial will follow at New Haven Cemetery Harrison, Ohio.
