Harold "Ed" Edward Mergenthal, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and veteran, passed away on September 23, 2025, at the age of 89 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on February 6, 1936, in Brookville, Indiana, Harold led a life marked by dedication to service, both in his career and in his community.
For many years, Harold was a proud member of Chevron, where he infused his work with integrity and commitment. His steadfast spirit extended beyond his professional life, as he served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. This service was a testament to his character, and he went on to be a lifetime member of American Legion Post #199, VFW Post #7570, and AM Vets #13 in Harrison, Ohio. For over 30 years, he was an active member of the Harrison Honor Guard, reflecting his deep respect for his fellow servicemen and women.
On August 29, 1959, Harold married Janice "Faye" Clark in Brookville, Indiana. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, nurturing their children Michael (Leslie) Mergenthal, Lorna (Tom) Spaeth, and Marilyn (Darrin) Walbom. Harold was not only a devoted father but a cherished grandfather to his grandchildren, Allison (Jordan) Corbin, Neil (Kelsy) Spaeth, Emily, Zachary (Gabi Bowers), and Melissa Walbom. His legacy endures through his great-grandchildren, Evelyn Spaeth, Francesca Spaeth, Harper Corbin, and Scarlett Corbin, who brought him immense joy.
Harold is also survived by his loving sister Carolyn (Merle) Talheimer and his brothers Donald and Robert Mergenthal. He shared close bonds with his sisters-in-law Hazel Schuck and Cathy Wasson.
He has been reunited with his dearly departed parents, Elmer and Elsie (King) Mergenthal, and his beloved wife Janice "Faye" Mergenthal, along with his sister Sue Drifmeyer, all of whom will be missed deeply.
Visitation will be held on September 29, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at noon at Jackman Hensley Funeral Home, located at 215 E Broadway Street, Harrison, Ohio. A graveside service will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps, along with the Harrison Honor Guard, honoring Harold's military service and commitment to his community.
